Show notes: This episode has already received considerable positive feedback from listeners who enjoyed the story of a word-slinger of the American West. The script took some time to develop and ultimately I believe the story pays off the premise’s promise. It is ultimately a message of admiration to the teachers, especially the English/Language Arts teachers, who inspired us.

pride and incredulous 3

This is Kristin Moresi’s first starring role. Kristin joined us for Pride and Prejudice (as Jane Bennett) and we recorded this episode on the same day.

Marilyn Olsen made a welcome return to Junction as the inspiring teacher Ms. Tutor.

I enjoyed the idea of Kurt Boucher as the Mayor becoming Jeff Savage’s prospector character (NOOOOO!!!!!) and Phil Hall’s Marshall Withers becoming Jack Sheedy’s Withers as a member of Marshall Bull’s gang.
Marshall Bull was portrayed by Olivia Wadsworth who will be acting on stage in the Warner Theater’s “Wait Until Dark”  Sept 21-29 in Torrington, CT.

Rebecca Rosewood became the voice of “Willoughby”, Rebecca starred in last week’s episode “Pride and Incredulous”.

John Fabiani impressed us in last week’s episode with his British accent as Mr. Wickfull. In this episode he joined us as the American west barkeep. Lots of voices from Mr. Fabiani and we’re going to explore more in upcoming episodes!

The music was created by J. Timothy Quirk, a three or four chord number with whistling on reverb and some horse sounds embedded into it.

Episode 226: Austen-tacious: Pride and Incredulous

IMG_9119

In Season 2  Episode 26 of Nutmeg Junction, we present “Masters in Pieces Theater with Austen-Tacious: Pride and Incredulous” it posits the question “What would life be like for the Bennett family if they lived in modern day Litchfield, Connecticut. Written by J. Timothy Quirk, the program aired the weekend of 8/24/2019 through 8/26 on the stations that air the Nutmeg Junction radio program.

Note: It only occurred to me when creating the artwork for the show that we should name it something other than Pride and Prejudice so I renamed it “Pride and Incredulous”

In this episode we welcome back Marilyn Olsen. Marilyn’s first performance with Junction was on Episode  14 “Battle of Elsenorift” and then she returned with the CT Lipstick Project for Episode 35 where she portrayed Inspector Trompe-Loeil in “3 Hours to Midnight”.  When Marilyn first says “OOOOHHHHH Mister Bennett…” it made me laugh and so happy. Marilyn will be in next week’s episode “The Sesquipedalian”.

We also welcome Kristin Moresi to Junction. Merosi portrays Jane Bennett in this piece. I enjoyed the say she says “Torrington” so magically in part two of this episode as if it were some far off land of wonder.  Merosi will return next week for The Sequipedalian in the title role.

We also welcome John Fabiani to Junction. Fabiani joins us for the first time as Mr. Wickfull. I really like his character choices on this episode and in the smaller role in “The Sequipedalian” next week, two very different characters with very different sounds.  I’m looking forward to seeing just how many voices he can do!

Speaking of the capacity for providing many voices, Rebecca Rosewood has been with us since Episode 220 (Death Plays the Ukulele” and shared her wonderful vocal talent most notably in last week’s episode (225) as Marcie Lyme in Harriet Holmes and the Long Game.  Rosewood portrays Liz Bennett and she nails it as Austen’s protagonist. I recommended to Rosewood that she look to the Jennifer Ehle version of the character as a guide and she did that!

Other stand outs:

Phil Hall as Mr. Collins has some particularly fun lines including his “pick up line” and subsequent qualifier and modifier which seems so befitting a modern take on the character.

The music for the dance scene was created by my daughter, Mariel. Thank you!

Jack Sheedy has a particularly identifiable “voice” that I can write to and when I wrote the announcer, I had that voice in mind, also allowing him to ad-lib some of the lines.

Melissa Gabehart’s Lydia was a fun counterbalance to the wild Lydia of the book because in modern America, Lydia wouldn’t be that wild at all. It reminds me that I need to write a new Snarflepoofs segment for a future episode so we can have Melissa’s “Sneetchey” return!

There was a portion of the story where I sing (as Kitty) in falsetto My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean perfectly dreadfully. While editing, I found 1) it wasn’t needed 2) it wasn’t as funny as it was doing it live. 3) it took too much time in the story and there was no way to edit it down sufficiently to make it work, so I removed it and the episode is better for it.

Olivia’s delivery of “I’ve been invited to a “mosh-pit”. I don’t know what it is, but it sounds DIVINE” makes me laugh.

Kurt Boucher’s juxtaposition of yelling “I shall have it!” and his “ad work” in selling an energy provider service is inspirational.

Jeff Savage as Mr. Bennett is perfectly cast and his delivery in every line is pitch perfect. His character’s discussion of “mascara” was a favorite during the recording session.

We want to thank Nicole Boucher for providing some guidance and feedback on the script.

For the cover art, we didnt have the actors dressed up as their characters so i was going to do a “group photo” before looking at the covers to some pride and prejudice volumes where there’s just a silhouette. Generally speaking I dont have a lot of profile photos of the cast, everyone is usually standing in front of their mics and I’m at the seat at the board but one night Jandi Hanna took some photos and one photo of Olivia seemed to be the best candidate for the attempt and with some work, we now have the silhouette cover.

It was fun to revisit the Harriet Holmes character with a one-off adventure.  We recorded the audio in different times and settings which made the editing process more of a challenge than usual but the end result flows well.
The second story was with Ensign Patrick and Captain Puffle and introduces Navigation officer Mariel. This was a lot of fun for Patrick and Mariel to work together.

This fun space set features a new way to share some real information about science in a fun and entertaining way in Spaceship Junction. This first story features Ensign Patrick (Patrick Quirk) with Captain Puffle (Rich Cyr) and we learn about what the Karman line is.  We hope this is an ongoing part of Junction.

There were many fun aspects of this show. My nephew took on his first radio acting duties as Ensign Patrick. Patrick joined us for the live show in April and since then I wanted to have him experience what it was like to record at the studio! We hope to do many more with this creative and talented young man!

I also found the opportunity in the Go-No Go poll to feature some friends from across the North American continent! I invited friends from Illinois, New Mexico, Arizona, western New York, upper central New York, Massachusetts and Canada to add their voices

It was a challenge to put every piece together but once completed, I feel it worked to give a full audio experience of the launch of the spaceship.

Episode 222: The Narada Radio Company Presents “Ghost Lantern”

Nutmeg Junction would like to introduce you to The Narada Radio Company, created by Pete Lutz. Pete Lutz is the son, grandson and father of community theatre actors, and a lifelong devotee to Old-Time Radio programs. In order to fulfill his desire to make his own audio plays, he created the Narada Radio Company (80+ members and growing) and began podcasting the “Pulp-Pourri Theatre” anthology series in 2013. The fourth and final season wrapped in 2018, and a 12-chapter Western serial, “Jake Dimes, Range Detective”, finished in early 2019. The Narada Radio Company occasionally performs live in local venues (in the Corpus Christi, TX, area), and is currently appearing in an all-new horror anthology podcast series, “The Cellar”, which at present has released three episodes of a planned 24. These plays are a mix of originals by Pete and guest playwrights, dramatized tales from the pulps, and adaptations of stage and screenplays. Not one of us gets paid for appearing on stage nor for our podcast performances — we are indeed “The Community Theatre of the Mind”.

SHOW NOTES

This was an unusual episode because nearly every single element of the recording was recorded at a different location and was pieced together.

There was a highly unusual situation that occurred across the street from WAPJ when we had planned on recording the show.

WAPJ is on Water Street in Torrington where there are a number of older structures in town and in one of those structures, a photographer had a studio and in the studio was an old safe which he decided to open only to find that there was a hazardous substance there as a theft-deterrent. The entire street was blocked off.

For safety reasons, I cancelled the recording session.

This left us in a quandary however as to how to record our show.

For Fanny and Fred, Jeff and Jandi along with Rich and Jack Sheedy came in and recorded on a Sunday.  Melissa Gabehart and Kurt Boucher recorded remotely.

Then for Thank Your Lucky Stars, all of it was recorded separately.

Jack recorded on that Sunday. Robert recorded remotely. Laurel Briggs recorded remotely.

The additional audio tracks of music and audience were separate. Fortunately it was only a ten minute piece!

Some of the upcoming episodes (except for next week which is unique for us as we have a guest production to share) were in the same boat as this episode and were recorded separately. Fortunately all of the Nutmeg Junction team turned in wonderful performances and if you didn’t know, you probably couldn’t tell!

Script Analyst to Join Nutmeg Junction Team

Carlo Dall’Olmo is not only the founder and president of the Phoenix Screenwriters Association, he is now the script analyst for the Nutmeg Junction.

The Phoenix Screenwriters Association is an active membership based 501c3 organization with a mission to educate the screenwriters of the future . Their website states, “Through our networking events, screenwriting courses and industry Q&As, we bring Hollywood to Phoenix.” Since 2009, Dall’Olmo helped build this community of screenwriters in the Phoenix, Arizona area and after years of meet-ups, script reading events including ones with actors performing the scripts, seminars with leading screenwriters and producers in the film industry, he saw the group become an official 501(c)(3) organization in 2016. He is currently the board President.

Dall’Olmo will bring his knowledge of script writing to the Nutmeg Juction radio show. Not every radio story will require the Dall’Olmo touch but as the script analyst, Dall’Olmo will help the Nutmeg Junction team with stories that have a particularly cinematic flair for this audio-only medium.

“We’re excited to have Carlo Dall’Olmo on board the Nutmeg Junction trolley of imagination,” says J. Timothy Quirk, the creator of the radio program. “Carlo brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to everything he does and his contribution will help elevate our work.  ”

The first script to be produced in this capacity is a Western tale  which is projected to be recorded this month.
