SHOW NOTES

The first feature is a new story for The Chance Mysteries.

Nathaniel and Netta Chance are our mystery solving aristocratic duo who becomes obligated to solve a murder after being invited to a social engagement.

There was an old Shadow show that took place at a piano recital. In this case we had fun with the idea of a ukulele  recital in the Finger Lakes. I was going to call it Death Plays the Oboe which sounds funnier but we didnt have access to an oboe and we did have access to a ukulele so we went with ukulele.

Thank Your Lucky Stars was a meta idea of Rich Cyr playing himself, which is always a fun concept, but the movie he’s pitching is one where he doesnt have any speaking lines.

I also enjoyed the idea of the Rich Cyr record collection

Episode 218: Thank Your Lucky Stars (Once Upon a Mime) and more!

Episode of Nutmeg Junction for June 8th weekend has “Thank Your Lucky Stars” a talk show with Jack Sheedy and Robert C Fullerton. Their guest is the “World’s Greatest’ Audio Theater Mime!”
Then we have the Doc Keen LIVE story from the live show that didn’t make it on to the three live episodes. Finally we end with a classic Professor A story: My Brother’s Keeper.

LISTEN HERE!

SHOW NOTES:

The live show featured a fun segment called Thank Your Lucky Stars with host Jack Sheedy and had The World’s Greatest Audio Theater Magician (played by Olivia Wadsworth) and Deborah Goodman as a “volunteer” participant in the magic.

The conceit of having guests as “World’s Greatest Audio Theater (something-that-shouldn’t-be-on-the-radio)” was a lot of fun, so much fun in fact that we decided to create a series of three 10 minute segments and if we have more ideas, we’ll create more!

So this first ten minute TYLS segment is “Once Upon a Mime” The world’s greatest audio theater MIME, played by Melissa Gabehart!

Now we were going to pair it with another Fanny and Fred story but as luck would have it, the story wasn’t finished in time (it will be recorded this weekend) but fortunately we had something else to share, one segment of a show we had not yet been aired: the Doc Keen LIVE story that we had to edit out of three live shows.  It was only edited out because the popular Fanny and Fred segment took up a time period longer than projected when the audience reaction time was factored into the equation.  So we are sharing it now

Finally we wanted to share a ten minute (or so) Professor A story and a stand alone one is “My Brother’s Keeper”. Joining the regulars Lana Peck (Professor A), Kurt Boucher (Dr. Robere) and Tiffy McKay (Ms. Gentry) are Josh Newey and Jandi Hanna in unforgettable roles!

Episode 217: Fanny and Fred At the Mall

Nutmeg Junction, America’s New Old Time Radio program features Fanny and Fred at the Mall followed by the continuing story of Space Sentries: The Vector Theorem

Listen HERE:

SHOW NOTES
Jandi Hanna and Jeff Savage return as Fanny and Fred, our favorite residents down in Locust Hollow. Shopping has changed at the local mall and so have the movie selections!  With narration by Dan Willey, the program features Phil Hall and Tiffy Mckay with Rich Cyr as…himself!

Then we continue our Space Sentries: The Vector Theorem serialized story on board the Salisbury. Will the crew ever take back control of the ship?

This episode features Rich Cyr as Ensign Puffle, Kurt Boucher as Admiral Alx, Phil Hall as Hologram Admiral Complication, Dan Willey as First Op Gillard, Jandi Hanna as Lieutenant Machinery, Olivia Wadsworth as Ace Grimsley, Lana Peck and Jeff Savage as Space Brigands with Tiffy McKay as action hero Jenny Snips!

Episode 216: Nutmeg Junction Live III

and we conclude with a Professor A which features Lana Peck, Tiffy McKay and Kurt Boucher as Professor A, Ms. Gentry and Dr. Robere with wonderful performances by Deborah Goodman and Dan Willey as the “visitors” and participation from the 8th grade class of Lee H. Kellogg School.

It was a wonderful experience to put on a full production of 3 episodes. We thoroughly enjoyed our work at The Center on Main in Falls Village, CT. We are grateful to Laurie Wadsworth for her extraordinary assistance in getting the program created there. We are grateful to Michael Illian for filming the production. We are grateful to Shaw Israel Izikson who took some wonderful photos. We are grateful to our guest conductors, Shane, Mariel and Patrick.

We are grateful to our audience who supported the show and this benefit for the Lee H. Kellogg school.

I am grateful for the entire cast who shared their time and talent bringing this event to life.

Studio episodes will return this weekend with episode 217: Fanny and Fred at the Mall and Space Sentries: Vector Theorem Part IV

Episode 215: Nutmeg Junction Live Part II

Nutmeg Junction performed full shows live for the very first time on 4/27/2019 at the Center on Main in Falls Village, CT. This is the audio of part two of the evening where the audio theater team performed 3 episodes

In part two our guest conductor for this episode was Mariel who acted in a prior Nutmeg Junction episode as “the doll” in our “Brady Bunch” homage of the Space-y Squad.

Our first story celebrates our “detective” characters all meeting and interacting for the very first time.

There’s Inspector Trompe-Loeil (Jandi Hanna), Harriet Holmes (Olivia Wadsworth), Nathaniel (Kurt Boucher) and Netta (Lana Peck) Chance, Daring Darling Darly (Deborah Goodman) and characters from other stories including Red Herring (Jeff Savage) and mention of Packa Dermy Poo, and Lenny Snitchwell (Jack Sheedy).

Rich Cyr portrays the librarian and also portrays…himself in a conversation with the Conductor, Conrad Sienkiewicz. Phil Hall portrays the Adman.

The second story we ran was a Doc Keen short which was heavy into audience participation.

I decided for the audio of this show to put in the recording of the live “Thank Your Lucky Stars”  story with Olivia Wadsworth as the world’s greatest audio theater magician on Jack Sheedy’s talk show-thank your lucky stars. It features wonderful piano by Robert C. Fullerton and Deborah Goodman as “the volunteer.

All stories were written by J. Timothy Quirk

Next post will be Part 3, the conclusion of the Live show!

Episode 213: Fanny and Fred in The Big Box Store!

Nutmeg Junction introduces Fanny and Fred. Down in Locust Hollow, Fanny and Fred make their way in this modern world. Today’s story: The Big Box Store!

Then we continue the journey of the Salisbury crew with another installment of Space Sentries: The Additional Lineage in The Vector Theorem!

SHOW NOTES

Inspired by comedy duo programs like Lum and Abner, we wanted to introduce characters portrayed by Jeff Savage and Jandi Hanna into our lineup of Junction characters.  The story was directly inspired by a trip I had to a store not unlike “Value Fun”. I walked home from the store and wrote out the story that day.

We also introduce the character of “Rich Cyr” which is wonderful because we also have Rich Cyr as a cast member of Nutmeg Junction. Having Rich jump in to the ad was a lot of fun and we have done more of this since. Rich has told me this is his favorite character to play!

NUTMEG JUNCTION LIVE: 4/27/2019 (7:30PM) CENTER ON MAIN IN FALLS VILLAGE CT

Nutmeg Junction will perform our first full live production of three complete episodes of our old time radio style audio theater show with 8 unique scripts (7 never before heard on the program) involving some of the most beloved Junction characters on Saturday 4/27/2019 at 7:30pm at the Center on Main, 103 Main Street, Falls Village, CT.

It’s been an amazing journey just to get to this point.

Nutmeg Junction is recorded at WAPJ, Torrington Community radio station and it airs on 14 stations in 4 states and online. Starting the program out was an adventure. The first three episodes were recorded on one night at the end of January, 2018. The studio was abuzz with excitement and activity.  An early concept for the show included not just an audio theater portion of the show but also a musical component and interview portion so Belle of the Fall and Elizabeth Victoria were in the studio to perform and guests State Rep Michelle Cook and Rich Cyr were there. By this time, Rich Cyr had already been invited to join our cast so he had the rare distinction of being a special guest and cast member.  Quality photos by LSG Original Photography captured the moment. The evening captured some extraordinary performances and we learned from the experience as we moved forward.

With these episodes recorded and subsequently edited, we had the “proof of concept” to submit to radio stations including WAPJ. WAPJ and the Robin Hood Radio Network which included multiple stations, wanted the show and had a timeslot for it. On March 31st, 2018 11am the Nutmeg Junction show aired on the Robin Hood Radio network and on April 1, 2018, the program aired on WAPJ.

At the beginning days of the show one of the formative ideas was to eventually perform the show live at least once that year and then do “more” in 2019.  We achieved the initial goal when we performed live on December 2nd 2018 as part of the SpeakEasy program, where we would be the featured “speakers” among many speakers that night for the Poetry/Spoken word event. We performed an Inspector Trompe-Loeil story, a Space Sentries story and an original script called “Thoughts Before Brunch”. It was a lot of fun to do and this spurred more interest to do a full live production of Nutmeg Junction.

Nutmeg Junction performing as a part of SpeakEasy Dec 2, 2018

It’s an interesting  challenge to produce a live production; it’s certainly very different from the creation of an in-studio recording. Being a part of the SpeakEasy event was a wonderful experience because our role was to show up and perform and we had unique stories no one had yet heard. We did promote the show and there was an article in the paper and there were opportunities to talk about it on the air and the end result was that the evening was the largest turn out for the SpeakEasy event they had had for the year. Still on the whole, our focus was on the performance itself and we enjoyed the opportunity to present stories in front of an audience.

Many old time radio programs were performed in front of a studio audience and there’s something extraordinary about the immediate feedback on the material. And some modern examples of this consistent audio theater in front of a live audience includes the formerly titled “Prairie Home Companion” and the LA Based “Thrilling Adventure Hour”. But both of these shows were performed in large cities with other beneficial factors unique to their shows built in, specifically national recognition of the show and/or the stars who performed on the show. But for us in 2019, one night a year to be directly producing a show is perfect. Once again we’re doing 3 episodes, just like we did in January, but this time it’s for an audience, and it’s live!

We are performing at The Center on Main. It’s a wonderful theater in the heart of a picture-perfect community of Falls Village.

I enjoyed the opportunity to talk about our upcoming 4/27 live show in a number outlets including Denver Underground radio with fellow Nutmeg Junction-eer Kurt Boucher.

Here’s the audio!

we had a wonderful spot on KBJB radio

Here’s the audio!

I enjoyed a wonderful conversation with Marshall Miles on Robin hood radio

Robin Hood Radio interview with J. Timothy Quirk

I enjoyed a wonderful interview with Barrie Soucy (audio to be uploaded soon).

I also enjoyed talking with Jacque Williams on the feel good show (sadly it wasn’t recorded!)

And an interview with Shaw on his podcast Shaw and Tell!

As the day approaches, I’m looking forward to sharing these fun stories and the exceptional vocal talent of the voice actors on the show with the audience.  The event will be a benefit for the Lee H. Kellogg School (all donations will be for the benefit of the school).

This is the only planned live event we will produce as a specific Nutmeg Junction show so it is a very special engagement. We encourage all to come and support the show, support the Lee H. Kellogg School and enjoy quality entertainment on 4/27/2019 at 7;30pm at the Center on Main in Falls Village, CT!

Episode 212: Malcolm MacDuff: Theatre Detective (Plus Space Sentries: Vector Theorem II)

Introducing Malcolm MacDuff: Theatre Detective. Jeff Savage stars in the title role and with his faithful associate Concord (Dan Willey) investigates a plot that occurs within a Shakespeare Festival.
Then we continue the Space Sentries: Additional Lineage story The Vector Theorem Part II. On the Salisbury, Ensign Puffle, (Rich Cyr), Lieutenant Laurel Yanny (Lana Peck) and Security Chief Ace Grimsely (Olivia Wadsworth) must deal with the Space Brigand invasion (Robert C. Fullerton and Jeff Savage) with the assistance of Admiral Alx (Kurt Boucher) and Hologram Admiral Complication (Phil Hall).

SHOW NOTES

IMG_3963 (2)

One of the original ideas for Nutmeg Junction that I had yet to write was the Theatre Detective, a Detective that played in to the Theatre tropes of backstage shenanigans. with puns galore.

I finally had the opportunity to write the script and put, if not every Shakespeare pun, certainly everyone I could think of.

IMG_3944 (2)

We then continued the story of Space Sentries. I asked which actors would be available and then tailored the second part of the story to include those characters.
